Kotaku – In Defense Of The Classic Controller – Project Natal

Admittedly, I didn’t read this article, but based on the title, I assume that I agree. Here’s my thinking: making games accessible to everyone means that you also have to change the types of games you make. It’s the same reason why I will never own a Wii, or if I do buy a Wii, it won’t be for myself, it will be for my girlfriend or for when we have guests over. I would never play a Wii while at home alone. Never, ever. There is absolutely no fun in motion control unless it is a social situation, because it’s bad enough to look like a goofball when others are doing the same thing.

But really, it’s not even the waggle controls that get me, it’s the fact that the games created for the Wii are not fun games. Well, they are fun in extremely short bursts, when playing in a group, but I cannot imagine a situation where I would play any of those games for an extended period of time. The graphics, gameplay and story just aren’t there. Sure, there’s always Mario and Link and Metroid, but once you get past that, what do you have? Oh! Another game with Mario in it? Yippee! Fuck that. I have a PS3 because I want to play games that pull me in. Earlier today, I was playing Bioshock and I was totally immersed. When a freaky bitch threw a corpse at me to distract me as she pulled out a metal pipe and charged at me, I was honestly freaked the fuck out. If there were a similar situation on Wii, I would be pulled out of the moment, because my instinct with a Wiimote would be to swing it like a pipe to defend myself, but the game wouldn’t allow that, because as a first person shooter, the pointer would be mapped to my view, so the camera would just swing around wildly. Or alternatively, I wouldn’t be immersed in the first place, because a situation like that would NEVER FUCKING HAPPEN on the Wii. Did you read the description of what happened? A fucking crazy bitch THREW A CORPSE AT ME before she charged me with a pipe.

When you start making games “accessible” to everyone, that means the content becomes pop, which means anything truly artistic, controversial, thought-provoking or offensive (read: interesting) gets stripped out so it will be something everyone can enjoy.

Aside from that, one thing I love about classic controls is that with a simple press of a button, I can do amazing things that I could never do in real life. And this concept isn’t just limited to killing zombies, or running across walls, or throwing fireballs, but to things like hitting a golf ball properly, or pulling a sweet crossover to drive in for a layup. I have tried playing golf on the Wii and it is just as frustrating and annoying as real golf. That is not fun. Not even a little bit. And now with Wii Motion Plus, I can only imagine it would be even worse.

I play games for the same reason I watch movies or read books: it’s a form of escapism, and when done well it can be just as amazing an experience as any other well told story. Sure, sometimes I play just to have fun, but there still needs to be something interesting, and it is rare that I find anything pop to be interesting any more.

Teaching at the Zoo

This morning, I did a special “English at the Zoo” lesson for about 20 or 25 kids aged 3-6. It was a lot of fun, and probably wouldn’t have gone off quite so well had I not been there because my boss was having trouble getting her Macbook to show things correctly on the projector and no one else at the zoo had ever used a Mac. So, even though her computer was all in Japanese, I was able to fix the problem in about 2 minutes because of this crazy idea I had, “There is a problem in displaying something. How about I go to the ‘Display Settings’?” For the life of me, I still just don’t understand why people are confused by Macs.

Anyway, at the end of the lesson we took the kids to see the bear cage, and as fortune would have it, the two Spectacled Bears were having sex.

After the lesson finished, I had some time before my private lesson, so I decided to take a walk around the zoo. I have lived within walking distance of the zoo during my entire time in this country, but I had never been there before, and now I’m glad that I never went. Tennoji Zoo is just a really sad, small, and very dirty zoo. The vast majority of the animals don’t have enough space and have given up on even getting up (as you can see with the leopard pictured here.)

The zoo itself is in a dirty and seedy area of the city (which many locals will tell you is the most dangerous place in Osaka) that is basically a flea market by day and a pan-sexual bazaar by night. Aside from the zoo, the area is also home to the biggest red-light district in Western Japan, and our favorite kushikatsu restaurant (though unlike the video, our place is not one where you cook it yourself, it is Bob Marley themed.)

Anyway, come see the rest of my pics from Tennoji Zoo.

It’s all booked

I finally found flights that won’t break my bank, and it’s all set. I’ll be flying in to Montreal on July 29th at 10:55PM. And I will be dead tired.

I am so scary

It is amazing how many Japanese females suddenly realize that they have a fake cell call when they see me walking towards them. Even in the middle of the day.

Just now, a girl was running, then stopped dead to take out her phone. Hell, even a businessman did it.

Why don’t they ever talk though? It would make it much more believable.

Welcome

May 26, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Welcome welcome, one and all. It’s time for chapter 6 in the life of Michael Thomas Heller (of course this will only make the 3rd regularly blogged chapter, but we’ll ignore that for now.) For those of you keeping track:

Chapter 1: Childhood (writing skills not developed)

Chapter 2: High School (chronicled sporadically in personal journals)

Chapter 3: Life at Syracuse

Chapter 4: Life in Montreal (also partially chronicled in photos)

Chapter 5: Life in Osaka (chronicled mostly in photos, but slightly in the previous journal and at Facebook)

Chapter 6: Life in Boston

To be accurate, life in Boston won’t really start until mid-August, but there has been overlap in older chapters, so why not keep up the trend. Anyway, have a good time to anyone who has found their way here. I’ll try to get the pace back up from where it was before. Mostly, I’ll be starting with e-mail posts of random thoughts from around Japan. I do have the option here to import my old journals, but I like the idea of a clean page.
